Below are the specialized wheel materials commonly used for AGV and industrial robots

1. Vulkollan® Wheels (High-end PU) – Most common for AGV

This is a premium material widely used in the automation industry.

Technical characteristics

• Special polyurethane (BASF Germany)

• Hardness: 92–98 Shore A

• Extremely high load capacity

• Excellent elasticity

Advantages

• Handles very high dynamic loads

• Extremely low wear rate

• Very low rolling resistance → saves AGV battery power

• Non-marking on epoxy floors

• Stable for 24/7 operation

Industrial AGV systems frequently use Vulkollan tread wheels because they provide high dynamic load capacity, excellent wear resistance, and very low rolling resistance.

Applications

• AGV logistics warehouses

• Semiconductor cleanroom robots

• Pallet transport robots

2. Cast Polyurethane Wheels (PU Cast)

This is the second most common type.

Characteristics

• PU hardness: 75A – 95A

• Can be cast onto cores made of:

  • Aluminum

  • Steel

  • Cast iron

PU is widely used because it offers high abrasion resistance, smooth movement, and does not damage factory flooring.

Advantages

• Cheaper than Vulkollan

• Easy to manufacture in custom sizes

• Load capacity: 100 kg → 2000 kg per wheel

3. Conductive / Anti-Static PU Wheels (ESD)

Used in factories such as:

• Semiconductor manufacturing

• Electronics assembly

• Lithium battery production

• Cleanroom environments

Characteristics:

• Conductive polyurethane

• Anti-static protection

• Prevents electrostatic discharge that could damage electronic components

 

4. Nylon / Polyamide Wheels

Used when the application requires:

• Very heavy loads

• Oil or grease environments

Advantages:

• Extremely high load capacity

• Minimal deformation

Disadvantages:

• Noisy during operation

• Lower traction (can slip)
